Stephen Farrell

Steve Farrell is a Partner in Banking & Capital Markets Audit Group and has a leadership role in the Firm’s control assurance and advisory engagements.

Steve Farrell is a qualified chartered accountant (ACA) with extensive experience in financial services audit, internal audit, and regulatory change and has worked with a range of financial services institutions, having developed a thorough technical understanding of financial benchmarks, financial instruments and banking products and front office control practices. He has a leadership role in respect of front office controls and processes, supporting firms’ compliance with local and global regulation, and regulatory codes of conducts. He also leads the assurance and advisory services for our firm on financial benchmark reform, and more recently is supporting the development of target control frameworks to support compliance with forthcoming EU Benchmark regulation.


Sam Duncan-Jones

Associate General Counsel, S&P Dow Jones Indices

Sam Duncan-Jones is Associate General Counsel at S&P Dow Jones Indices (S&P DJI) based in Dublin. In his role, Sam is responsible for all legal matters of S&P DJI in Europe, including transactions, regulatory matters, disputes and intellectual property issues. Sam joined S&P DJI in 2014. Before that Sam spent 12 years as an in-house lawyer in the software and IT sector, including positions with IBM, Algorithmics and TIBCO. Sam is admitted as a solicitor in England and Wales.

Piotr Giemza-Popowski

Counsel, Investment Management Group at Arendt & Medernach S.A., Member of the EFAMA Benchmarks Task Force

Piotr Giemza-Popowski is a Counsel in the Investment Management practice of Arendt & Medernach.

He is also a member of the EFAMA Benchmarks Task Force, which coordinates the European funds industry’s response to any European legislative initiatives in the area of benchmarks.

He regularly advises on the setting-up of and ongoing regulatory matters relating to UCITS with a particular emphasis on complex, structured UCITS.

As part of his regulatory practice he advises, in particular, on all aspects relating to benchmarks, including the Benchmarks Regulation and the UCITS rules on use of and disclosures regarding benchmarks.

He also has experience in the formation of alternative investment funds (including Specialised Investment Funds and Reserved Alternative Investment Funds) and joint ventures, fund restructuring, managed account mandates, insurance linked fund arrangements and secondary transactions in fund interests, primarily in relation to private equity and real estate funds.

He is admitted as a solicitor in England and Wales and is a member of the Düsseldorf Bar (Germany). He is also registered on List IV with the Luxembourg Bar.

Chantal Sourlas

Policy Officer, ESMA

Chantal Sourlas is a Policy Officer within the Ratings, Indices and Securitisation Department at the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA). Within the Benchmarks Team she acts as Rapporteur for ESMA’s Benchmarks Network. At ESMA she has also contributed to a number of workstreams on Sustainable Finance and has been a member of the European Commission’s Technical Expert Group developing a Technical Advice to the European Commission on Climate benchmarks and ESG disclosures for benchmarks. Before joining ESMA, she worked as a market risk manager and senior auditor in the banking sector.
